Today’s Daily Rant is on SM Entertainment, and their bad MVs that have just achieved another level of bad with the most recently-released one. (You know what I’m talking about).
Ever since the MV-quartet (Sorry Sorry, Bonamana, Mr. Simple, and A-Cha) of Super Junior’s of our boys dancing in weird rooms and showing off their hotness in close-ups, we would think that that was the worst SM can do in terms of MV production. Yet the entertainment has once again surprised us with bad MVs.
Since the release of Sorry Sorry, which is like, three years now, Super Junior has been unfortunately trapped in boxes with weird lighting and dancing in suits, plus a few close-ups of the members. Obviously to this point, our boys haven’t managed to escape that stage-like jail from SM. And sadly, because of the almighty power from ELFs that made SM think we all love weirdo rooms, f(x) also joined the fun with Pinocchio and SNSD with The Boys. Except f(x) had little Mickey Mouse-like thingees flying across the room, and Jessica managed to capture a dove, which eventually led them to a desert.
After SM screwed around with Suju’s comeback last year, we have pretty much given up on expecting good stuff from the company. And that is when EXO came with a bang with their super-high budget MVs. Now those aren’t exactly too creative, and the fact that EXO members dressed up as Death Eaters and saying shoot anonymous did creep me out a little, but you can see the effort. SM even created that tree story to boost up the new rookie group. Then after EXO, Taetiseo came along with their super diva-like Twinkle MV, where the girls are just so gorgeous and the stuff actually did look quite amazing. So yeah, we got our hopes up again.
Then what did we get?
Taetiseo’s MV for another song from the album, called “OMG“.
And literally, I OMG-ed when I saw the MV. That is called a fan-made video…a bad one, where the company did not provide enough stuff for the fans so they had to keep re-using the concept photos and mirroring every picture that had gone through tons of photoshop (I swear Tiffany looked nowhere like her anymore). Honestly, after all the hype, this is what you come up with? Come on, SM. You are part of the BIG 3! Look at what JYP is doing, look at what YG is doing…even TS Entertainment and Cube are doing quite well.
Even Shindong proved to us that he can make decent MVs like Oppa Oppa.
With a company big as SM, it obviously doesn’t lack the the basics: money, production team, creativity…that is, if you watch their MVs from like ten years ago. TVXQ’s Mirotic, and Wrong Number, Super Junior’s It’s You and Marry U, SNSD’s Oh! and Gee, SHINee’s Replay, S.E.O.U.L by Suju and SNSD, f(x)’s Hot Summer…heck, we still totally loved those simple ones like f(x)’s Chu and NU ABO, Suju’s No Other, SHINee’s Hello…or even SNSD’s Time Machine PV.
But perhaps it is because of the super-supportive ELFs, Cassies, Sones, Jumping Boas, Pluses/Aff(x)tionates, and Shawols, SM doesn’t find it necessary to produce decent MVs anymore. And with EXO’s rapidly-expanding Exotic fanbase, I can totally see them going down that path, once SM finds the group nice and stable.
All in all, with f(x)’s comeback in a few days, Super Junior’s 6 jib arriving before Leeteuk joins the military, I really hope SM doesn’t mess up this time. They have been screwing around for a few years now, and it is time they get their head back in the game.

OMG This is my point exactly. Before I even read this I said the exact same thing on a comment on youtube about the same flashing lights in a weird boxed room on f(x)’s Electric Shock video teaser.
I got bashed by people’s comments telling me not to hate on SM. I love SM artists. All of them are amazingly talented. But the COMPANY itself is something I don’t care for. The way they promote, the schedules, the MV’s, and the hiatus after you announce you are dating someone is why I wish SM would shape up.

SING IT, SISTER!
Now seriously, I love love love SM Artists. I love their dances, and I love their songs. But their MVs don’t have anything else! It’s disappointing. EXO’s MAMA MV was good, and I absolutely loved Twinkle. But OMG was downright sad. And don’t even get me started on SuJu (love them forever, but they need a new concept)

Agreed, even smaller companies will spend on higher budget sets than SM XP

I totally agree with this! Recently I find myself disappointed whenever I see that an MV from one of SM’s groups is just the group dancing in different rooms plus close-up shots. Especially when SJ’s A-cha came out! Man. That was such a huge let-down, especially since It’s You and No Other were promoted songs from repackaged albums but they had much better MVs.
I hope SM doesn’t keep on doing this, especially now that it’s f(x)’s comeback and SJ’s 6jib.

Unfortunately, that’s true >.>
06/07/12 10:47 pm
I don’t really agree.

If SM Entertainment hadn’t labeled the video as an MV and just a slideshow then I would be alright with it...but they labeled it an MV and that was not what I was expecting at all. I’ve enjoyed JYP, YG, TS, and Cube’s...even some of the other companies...but if you’re going to label this one a MV then i’ll treat it as one...a crappy one.
I agree the fact I like YG MV mostly !! Heck SM

Agreed. I wish they’d give their artists some leeway when it comes to making MVs. Poor SuJu probably wanted to do something different than dancing in dark rooms and have a bunch of close ups. D:

SM should just try to put more effort in mv for all their groups! OMG mv is just the mv that triggered this all, because they haven’t been doing, what their groups deserve!
06/07/12 4:43 am
While I agree with all of the stuff about the weird rooms (SM is definitely putting more effort into EXO than anyone else) I have to disagree with your point about the OMG “music video”, because it’s not like that’s a song that TTS is actually promoting, and the K-Pop industry never even makes videos for the song that isn’t the main promoted one, unless it’s a repackage or one of those BTS music videos, so I don’t see why people are complaining, since this is more than you should expect from the K-Pop industry, not less. Maybe SM shouldn’t have titled it as a “Music Video”, since it’s not really, but it’s still nothing to complain about.

Me and my friends were actually talking about this before o.o
sm really needs to step up their game. Let’s compare 2 mvs that came out recently, snsd’s omg and bigbang’s monster.
The two are on completely different levels. Bigbang’s has explosions, art, costume changes.... It’s amazing.
Then you have snsd’s slideshow. Unacceptable.
Both groups are megapopular and have been around for many years but this just goes to show that just because you have a large fanbase you cant start skimping on your mvs. Mvs tell a story about your song, and that can help get fans. Sm’s gonna have to learn this, and now, before their popularity drops, fans go away, and sm will become no more. Im sorry if it seems like imm bashing because honestly im not a big fan of sm groups in general but we can all agree that this is getting out of hand.
Wow that was long -_-
I think they just wanted to try something new and not like the usual mv
Taetiseo’s OMG mv was really like a fan-made.
SM should have put more efforts on these mvs. Or else fans might start leaving or maybe ur path to more success in the future will start disappearing
06/07/12 2:11 am
in OMG’s case, i would have even preferred dancing in a plain room.
or a live mv.
but i do think they three of them deserve a rest, especially with paparazzi coming up soon :D
06/07/12 1:42 am
Really, Taetiseo’s OMG MV is really a let-down.. They still should be putting more effort in these MVs…
06/07/12 1:17 am
well said. SM’s videos went downhill a lot. compare their MVs to YG’s - SM’s has NO storyline, just random dancing, scenes, and photos. O__O
SM is just too overconfident thinking “oh don’t worry, SUJU’s fans will still love them.” but dude, no. it doesnt work that way. we love them because of the nicely-put together MVs, along with the songs that go with it.
SM is too over confident. It’s about time they try harder in all their MVs. :/
06/07/12 1:10 am
that’s true.... maybe because they think fans really love to see close ups… sure we do… but the MV really needs to match the song and support it… make them decent again please… SM
06/07/12 1:05 am
This is so true! They really need to start putting in more effort with the MV’s!
06/07/12 12:53 am
Seriously SM, why don’t they just stop pocketing the money and give some real fan service?
06/07/12 12:52 am
Finally, someone make this kind of post!
06/07/12 12:41 am
THIS THIS VERY MUCH.
06/07/12 12:31 am
I guess their fans are just really supportive…
06/07/12 12:30 am
u r awesome this is so effing true!!!!!!! but idk i thought SHINee’s Sherlock mv has been one of their better mv’s
so hopefully SM does something about this cuz honestly the rookie groups and other entertainment companies have such awesome mvs!! :D
06/07/12 12:26 am
“Jessica managed to capture a dove” - I lol’d :’D
I absolutely agree. I think SM is too comfortable with their position as one of the big 3 and are really losing the creative mentality rookie agencies are putting forth. I hated to OMG MV a LOT. If they were just going to do a slide show they should have done something memorable like past performances of SNSD (Like SuJu did with Superman).
-shrugs- I guess they know that no matter how horrible they do on their part, fans will still buy what they are selling because it has their idol on it.
