Japan and Korea are currently experiencing some serious tension, as the controversy regarding which country should own Dokdo, the group of islets in the Sea of Japan, is growing.

Both countries feel that they are the rightful owner, and many citizens have voiced their opinions on the matter. Many celebrities, however, have been receiving negative criticisms for their comments on the situation.

Earlier in August, Super Junior’s Siwon re-tweeted a post made by South Korean president Lee Myungbak, which said that Dokdo belongs to South Korea and that they must fight to keep it. For this, Siwon received a lot of slack. Siwon’s father also criticized Japan on his Twitter account, which caused even more insults to be flung at his son.

Many Japanese fans of Super Junior showed their disapproval towards Siwon, with some even claiming that they would throw eggs at the singer during their next fan meeting. Fans stated, “We know that the government in Japan and Korea don’t think alike, and that’s not something that can be controlled, but there is no need to discuss it on Twitter.”

Kara’s Gyuri underwent a similar situation, but for different reasons entirely. During a conference for the group’s latest album, “Pandora,” the members were asked about their opinion on the Dokdo matter. Gyuri answered, “We haven’t been promoting in Korea for a long time, but we have received a lot of love from the fans in Japan, so we’re very grateful.”

Despite dodging the controversial question, Korean netizens were upset with Kara, Gyuri particularly, for only caring about making money and not supporting their country.

No matter what they do, idols will receive criticism for voicing their opinions. Should idols even be asked about their opinions if they’ll just be insulted about it afterwards? What are your thoughts on this matter?

Ahhh I hope the Dokdo situation can be resolved already but I know that we have a long way to go before that happens. I agree it is a sensitive topic but I like it that idol singers voice their opinions about it. This is nothing compared to the South Korean soccer player who got his Olympic medal taken away.

This is so stupid. Seriously, I think especially in the case of political matters between Korea and Japan, no idol should say anything about it, at all. It’s just such a sensitive matter that no matter what you say, you cannot please both sides. And since Japan is an important country for idols to be marketed in, you won’t want to anger Japanese fans. Especially since both countries’ fans love their country so much.

Aww poor Siwon. this is so stupid.

Some more undeserved hate >.>

wow overreacting slightly?

hmm, what are they expecting from them if they are asking THEIR opinions

sad news :(

OH NO O_O..

this is just mess up. plus these 2 ppl are both my fav in their both group, like siwon is my bias in suju an gyuri my bias in kara

I think this whole situation is just unfortunate. :L

shoot i press the wrong button sorry.

It’s hard being in a position of power and having a strong opinion :( No matter how much I disagree with someone and *hate* their opinion, I honestly believe everyone is entitled to one. It sucks because in cases like these I think it’s honestly just better to keep your mouth closed on the matter. Unless you feel really strongly about it - then by all means stick to your guns. smile

I’m actually a little surprised with Gyuri’s comment (not that I believe she’s anti-Korean or whatever shiz neitizens are throwing around) but I think it was just a poor choice of wording. I can understand how Korean fans would be upset at that.

This is just stupid. They don’t deserve being criticized just for having an opinion.

No matter what someones gonna end up hating someone else’s opinion if it doesn’t match theirs, so why even bother? Especially celebrities. No need to put them in tough positions like that.

LOL Why would they ask a question that will put Kara in a difficult situation in the first place?

I don’t even know when they’ll solve this matter omg…

one of the reasons why their statements are being highlighted like this under such scrutiny is because they’re idols. honestly if any random person said what they said it probably wouldn’t have been blown to such proportion.
and the throwing egg thing is real mature (sarcasm)
it’s honestly hard for idols to be well-versed in sensitive political issues like this because they have such packed schedules. and besides if their opinion doesn’t sit well with you then you can just not support them. it’s not necessary to criticize and threaten like this.

Gyuri is right. As a professional entertainer, it is not their obligation to support either side.

D: This is unnecessary. ._.") No need to throw eggs to someone stating their opinion… -____-")

Getting egged just for stating your opinion? What the heck? Gyuri had the right idea in trying to avoid the actual question. These guys aren’t politicians. They’re idols.

poor siwon :(

Ugh. Islands.  I hope they settle this right away. But I definitely can’t forgive those Japanese fans who’ll throw eggs at Siwon!!! >.<

Ah...those islands again.  It’s a dangerous and sensitive topic to talk about.  Really something that the governments need to talk about...not idols.  I think Gyuri avoiding the question was appropriate especially because KARA has been doing so much in Japan and overseas.

That’s what Siwon gets for voicing a simple opinion? Egged? Everyone should get egged then, because everyone in Japan and South Korea alike have some sort of opinion about that.

Oh dear...hope this doesn’t get too serious. I mean, lots of K-Pop idols perform quite frequently in Japan and have quite a number of fans from Japan as well, that includes Super Junior. In a way, I somehow don’t see any problem in Siwon’s re-tweet. Every individual have different opinions on things. This is a matter that the governments should solve, don’t include K-Pop please!
