Mnet’s M! Countdown is set to have adjustments in the way that they rank the music chart. As of August 22nd, the Korean Musicians Association, Korean Entertainment Production Association, KMP Holdings as well as other names in the entertainment world have been given details as to how the changed system will look like.
Jung Yoo Jin PD, responsible for these changes, gave an announcement on August 28th saying, “We are reorganizing how the rankings are made to better fit the changing music trend and also to have the public [agree] with the chart.”
Mnet director Han Dong Chul said, “‘M Countdown’ strives for fairness, and to raise the equality level, we decided to change up our ranking system. We are holding this meeting to see what the opinions of the experts in the industry are before we make any changes to the rankings.”
The director added, “We will work hard to make a fair chart that reflects the music trend as well as the hard work of producers and artists alike.” The changes have come about following agreements that rankings need to correlate with current trends and matters affecting the music industry. There was also understanding that music programs should give new singers a pathway towards improvement and development so that they can continue the already successful hallyu wave in the future. The rankings are also very important for international fans in terms of discovering more KPOP.
One of the biggest changes is that fan votes are going to receive much less of a saying in the rankings whilst actual sales, downloads and plays will play the bigger part. A research study targeted at the 15-39 age group will also be conducted in order to make amends for fan votes playing a lesser role. Another major adjustment is that a winner be decided from two finalists rather than three as has been done in the past. The new system is to be put in place starting from the last week in August
Meanwhile, news has arrived that F.T. Island’s Hongki has replaced Tony An as the new MC.

I really hope they don’t make too big of a change. In a way, I feel that putting the rookies in an unfavorable position should make them want to make better music and help them strive toward getting the top position. Its either not really making a big change or getting rid of the ranking system completely as SBS Inkigayo and MBC Music Core has done.
I think that they should have just stuck to the original and not changed anything.

Hmm. Let’s see how these changes take effect.

Hmmm so instead of just clicking and voting for your favorite idol, now the music program will take into account sales and downloads for the week? I don’t really see that actually changing anything. It’s still putting rookie groups in an unfavorable position, but I guess there is no real way to avoid that.
Oh well, I hope that the new ranking system turns out well regardless
