Today’s Daily Rant is about those people around the world who got addicted to Gangnam Style, listen to it 1000 times a day, and think they already know every single detail about KPOP. Like a “KPOP Expert”.
Note: I know that none of our beloved Ningin subscribers are like that, because if you are on Ningin, you probably aren’t here simply because of the one hit song, but because you like KPOP like everyone else here does. Though even if you really ARE here because of PSY and Gangnam Style…lemme tell ya, KPOP has so much more to explore.
Anyways.
I live in Canada, and is even further from Korea than you can imagine, with almost nobody in my neighborhood actually listening to KPOP. However, Gangnam Style was (and still is) such a successful hit that it actually made its way up north without the regular advertising by us fans (by that I mean screaming and shouting and fangirling). Now my school is full of Gangnam Style everywhere. They even made a parody using out school mascot to cheer on our football team (which is like, the biggest event in our school). It even plays during the morning announcements, when usually it’s Call Me Maybe or something Justin Bieber.
BUT! All my KPOP-didn’t-exist-before-Gangnam-Style friends keep telling me how great KPOP is, while Gangnam Style is the only one they have ever heard of. It really gets to me when I hear that because honestly, there is way more in KPOP than what you know right now. Gangnam Style really is just one of the billion great songs Korea has to offer. There are trots, ballads, dance songs, raps, and they are even adding dubstep and some jazz elements into their music now. And while Gangnam Style serves as an extremely successful dance song, it certainly doesn’t cover the entire greatness of KPOP.
And I won’t even get to the aegyos and beastly idols and dancing machines and those other pretty “basic” KPOP stuff that the world still hasn’t realized the greatness of.
Don’t get me wrong, I am overjoyed to see my favorite genre of music make its way to the rest of the world, to my country, to my community. But you know what, I have been digging my way into KPOP for the past few years ever since Super Junior-M invaded the Taiwanese/Chinese market and succeeded. And ever since, KPOP is a part of my life. And don’t you ever, EVER, think that you can just start lecturing me about how in depth your knowledge of KPOP is while Gangnam Style and PSY is all you know about.
So what if you’ve heard Gangnam Style three times for the past second? So what if you now hump the air while in the elevator? So what if you found out that the random guy dressed in full yellow is actually a grasshopper? (They probably wouldn’t get that one either.) That is still only a little tiny corner of the entire awesomeness of KPOP in general.
…So stop suggesting me to go listen to Gangnam Style as if I haven’t listened to it a billion times already (and yes, 1 billion out of that gigantic stack of views are from me). Why not turn up YOUR speakers and start listening to some Super Junior or Big Bang or Beast or 2NE1 or A Pink or SNSD or SHINee or B.A.P or BTOB or Infinite or 4minute or B1A4 or 2PM or 2AM or Davichi or T-ara or TVXQ or BoA or f(x) or Wonder Girls or IU or G.NA or Secret or Rainbow or After School or NU’EST or SISTAR or…
You get the idea.
(Sorry if I missed out on some of the idol groups. Do feel free to add your biases in the comments)

frankly, i dont really like the song cause i think its wayyy to catchy and so it always gets into my head. (dont get me wrong, im not a jealous psy hater, its just my music style)
but i also think its kinda weird hearing it on my school pa systems in the morning, especially since my school is mostly made of middle eastern people who have never even heard of a kpop song before that before gangnam style. its awkward watching them do the horse dance… i remember when wayy back, they used to make fun of lucifer and lies.
10/13/12 6:37 pm
You know what else bugs me? The people at my school pronounces it Gang (like a gang of people) and nam (Jam with an n). ARGHGHHHHH!!! I cant even…
10/10/12 12:01 am
I agree. I can’t believe the stupidity of some people thinking that Gangnam Style is the only par of K-pop.
10/09/12 9:06 pm
Agreed 100% I don’t like the fact that the first glance of kpop is at it’s least serious form. I don’t blame Psy the least bit at all, Gangnam Style is a great song, but it kidna infuriates me that it’s getting attention - especially in America, because it’s just silly.
so true!!!
they were calling me freak, and now they’re acting like a KPOP expert just because Gangnam Style, oh please.... they even making a cover and flashmob..
exactly!!!! so agree!!
well all i can do is turn my head away and ignore
10/09/12 6:33 pm
Or UKISS lol and yes I agree with this 1 billion percent!!! Sometimes I’d like to smack those types of people in the face lol

I’m glad that “Gangnam style” has made its way over here, especially since i actually hear it in the midwest, but now all my friends just want to talk about is Gangnam Style...and that’s it. They won’t even consider that there are other things, and if it’s not funny then they’re done with it.

I’m so glad i do have to deal with this

I don’t understand KPOP fans and their hipster attitudes about their non-KPOP loving friends. Before Psy, you couldn’t even hold a conversation with your non-KPOP loving friends about KPOP. Now you have friends who claim they’re KPOP experts? Isn’t this an improvement for you KPOP fans? That your non-KPOP loving friends know that KPOP actually exists? Stop being such KPOP hipsters and just share your KPOP love.
I sometimes also wonder if this complaint would exist if it wasn’t Gangnam Style that’s popular but some super manufactured, pretty boy group’s song. Would this rant exist? Are some of you upset that an unattractive 34 year old was the first to make a sizable amount of success in the US?
Sorry Jinra, but I liked it better when they didn’t know KPOP. Now they think they’re better than me for knowing KPOP. It’s not that we are upset of PSY’s success, but the people’s cockiness.
Cocky? Boo hoo. Why does that matter if someone’s being cocky about your interest? Like what you like and don’t give a crap about it. Tell ‘em what else is good about KPOP and hopefully it’ll stick.
I’m not upset at all about PSY being the one to make it into the market. He deserved it. I love PSY. And I don’t think he’s unattractive. He’s not like a Choi Siwon or Taeyang, but just an older chubby guy, but he’s not ugly. He’s actually adorable. He has his own charm and I’m sure not everyone thinks he’s unattractive.
I don’t care about other people having interest in Kpop only for Gangnam Style, but it can be frustrating when someone tries to teach you about something you already know about and make you feel like you’re wrong about it when they just found out about it. But it’s whatever. I don’t really care about it. I’m in my own little Kpop and Gangnam world all alone. But I guess it’s more of a pride thing. Kpop fans have a lot of pride. And most people as I put in my last comment, aren’t open to other cultures, but love comedy, so Gangnam Style is all there will ever be to them even if you introduce them to other KPOP artists/groups.
I hope that his US debut does well though, but in the US, you can never know that.
10/09/12 8:19 am
LOL I guess it’s the same in America. And well the thing is people here at least generally as a whole aren’t open to other cultures. Like they won’t listen to music with a language they don’t understand or something. But everyone here like loves comedy, so that’s why they love Gangnam Style and nothing else. If they listened to kpop, despite how awesome it is, a majority of the people would probably not like it. But it stinks that people think Gangnam Style is just comedy, when in reality it’s much more than that. Kpop is much more than comedy as well… but people just think “ahaha horse dance” :s

I don’t think thats an improvement. How can we have a conversation with the now KPOP loving friends when the only thing they know is the Gangnam style? If you really want to be an KPOP fan then the Gangnam style isn’t the only thing you are supposed to know.
Yep PSY has made the world realize that there is something called KPOP and it’s a happy thing for KPOP fans but what the article really states here is that there are other artistes other than PSY and people should listen to them to realize what KPOP actually is.
10/09/12 3:53 am
This article so relates to what I feel. I’m getting tired of people who don’t know anything about KPOP but blast and brag about the Gangnam style everywhere and anywhere as though that is the only KPOP song available.
It’s just my opinion but i think Psy had a easier job in breaking into the worldwide music industry as many other KPOP artistes had already broke into the music industry in many parts of the world before thus paving a path for the future artistes to promote their song easily worldwide. It’s just that his song had a fun and wacky feel that attracted everyone to the song and eventually making it famous.

Seriously, it gets annoying when people act like they know kpop when all they know is gangnam style. -_-

I know seriously man I had people make fun of me and make racial comments about me liking kpop now that the whole started to like it know they like it. I’m very proud that kpop is coming out and reaching a very high lvl but there are so annoying commenting on other groups from copying PSY I had been goin into so many fights because ppl don’t know anything and there all basing it on PSY so augh!! So please to all the new listeners don’t comment on anything when u don’t know anything about a singer or group!!

so true
kpop really has so much more to offer
i love kpop not because of psy
i never knew him or that he was a part of YG Family until his hit song
but i admire it and “father” and “art work”
i love them
big kpop fan here
hopefully more people will actully admire more of kpop
10/09/12 1:29 am
i agree i would love to see how many of these so called kpop fans name at least 20 bands or singer without naming psy and i can tell that wouldn’t know. whereas someone who just love kpop they could name the 20 artist or group in about 5 minute, i just say before you think you are a kpop fan because of psy listen to other groups music and then can talk about being a kpop fan

AGREED AGREED AGREED AGREED AGREED <3
Finally someone said it!
I just totally agree. I’m from Canada too…
10/09/12 12:42 am
Omg. Im’ totally with you my friend. *o* My school is full of Asians. Most of us know what K-Pop is. They might not be addicted, but they still know what it is. I’m just happy that the people at my school aren’t K-Pop experts when all they know is Gangnam Stlye.
10/09/12 12:18 am
I’m glad that at my school no one is like that. Half my school is Korean so KPOP is like a part of life and then some non-Asians or people not from my school start trying to school me on KPOP after hearing only Gangnam Style, I’m like “No”. I’ve been in KPOP for 4 of my 16 years alive and you just come into KPOP after 2 months when Gangnam Style comes out and tell me about KPOP? Yeah, I don’t think so. You don’t even know enough KPOP to me about KPOP
