Increasingly more South Korean men are willing to go under the knife; opting for plastic surgery to improve their facial features. In South Korea, the market for men-only plastic surgery clinics is expanding. Previously, men were hesitant to obtain plastic surgery, and those who did it wanted it to look as natural as possible. Now Korean men are bolder with their decisions, frequently asking for highly noticeable nose implants, wanting to achieve higher nose bridges similar to those found in Caucasians.

Some Korean men feel that it’s not a shameful decision, others believe that looks can help them acquire jobs, and 73% of women find that there’s nothing wrong with men going under the knife. Another factor worth considering is the entertainment industry.

To begin, I personally feel that one person does not have the right to judge another if they decide to get plastic surgery. It is an extremely personal decision, and does not affect other people in any negative way. Let’s face it, everyone wants to be attractive. (Look at the picture above, honestly, he looks great.)

South Korea is known as a country with a thriving plastic surgery industry, and I find it interesting, but not surprising, that more men are getting it. In Asia, I feel that the standards are climbing as to what is considered attractive, fashionable, and simply presentable, for men. Especially in Korea, many beauty companies and cosmetic stores are choosing male celebrities to represent them. Perhaps this installs an idea in male consumers that they should strive to look attractive as well. (I also find this marketing tactic brilliant, women will be attracted to stores having their favorite idols’ posters, and the market for men can be expanded as well.)

I also find it so intriguing that some believe that looks will help them acquire jobs. To some degree, it’s true. My school’s business club is preparing us for a national business competition, and from the club leader, “Look good. You get free points for looking good.” First impression is important for job interviews, and how good looking you feel can play such a big role in your confidence. Perhaps Korean men feel that being charming is a life long advantage. (Some Koreans offer their children plastic surgery as graduation gifts.) In South Korea, plastic surgery is just so accessible, men can easily achieve this goal. It’s also a very successful country, and people can easily afford it nowadays.

Finally, close to our hearts, the KPOP world. Idols are figures that people look up to, and in Korea, they all look amazing. Some even share openly that they’ve got work done. When idols get into scandals, intense criticism arrives at how they are setting poor examples for the people that look up to them. This shows how much idols can influence their fans. If idols in your culture are beautiful, they’ve got the love of their fans, and they are accepted for getting plastic surgery, wouldn’t you find plastic surgery a good thing too?

So, what do you think on the KPOP industry and its effects on Koreans getting plastic surgery? If you were in Korea, would your thoughts on plastic surgery be different than it is now?

I think it’s definitely fine to get plastic surgery. I dont get it - people make fun of “ugly” people, and yet they still laugh when these people decide to get plastuc surgery… :/
well anyways, i just wanted to say that maybe it’s not just Kpop, but more of just.. a Korea thing. Sometimes, we forget the fact that Kpop Idols are very talented individuals in their own way, not just a group of pretty-faced boys and sexy ladies.
I dunno. Like, I really look up to Henry Lau. Not because of, oh my god, his good looks, but because of his violin skills. :/ Get what I’m saying? yeah… .-. My point is, if an idol IS influencing the people in any way, it should be influencing them artistically, instead of good looks..
well, i dont know if you understood what ive said… i have a hard time wording stuff.. LOOOL… .-.

That is kind of sad that people feel so uncomfortable with their face that they would get surgery. But that guy up there does look better, like an actor or somethin’. But I think that Kpop is a really strong thing. It affects a lot of people in different ways. & I didn’t know that this was something going on.

this kpop effect is strange
men are having plastic surgery is normal in korea
but alot of people should not care so much about their looks
everyone knows thats it whats in the heart that matters
besides i prefer the the natural look

I agree with you, it’s totally not our business if people get plastic surgery. Especially since it is just so *normal* in Korea compared to me in Canada. And I can absolutely see Kpop affecting the decision to go under the knife. But you can really say that for any culture - China, India, Canada, United States etc.

I think you’re key point is that it is accessible and that the social norm is that it’s totally okay. In that way I don’t find it weird at all that they’d go for that option if they had it.

As a non-kpop fan even I feel completely intimidated by Kpop beauty standards. I feel like my jaw is to big, my eyes to small, my legs to short or that I’m too fat. I think Kpop shows a very extreme type of beauty that I don’t see in North American culture - like Jlo, Beyonce, Rihanna, Nikki Minaj, Britney Spears - these are all women with great bodies but would be considered fat in Kpop industry since they are all so skinny.

It really is hard not to compare yourself to the ‘best’ of kpop and this is coming from a non-Korean. I can’t imagine what a citizen would feel like.

As for men I think it’s cool if they want to do it. Nothing wrong with wanting to look attractive.

I think if they want to do it, they can do it. It doesn’t effect me in any way!

He didn’t look terrible in the beginning… he was average… but he sure does look more handsome now… and younger. But I don’t care about plastic surgery… I’d do it too if I wasn’t afraid… but I guess people think natural beauty is best, but there are people out there who feel they aren’t blessed with natural beauty…

I have nothing against plastic surgery and its all their choice so it doesn’t affect me. I don’t get why some people get all hype and be like “eww omg she got plastic surgery blah blah blah” how does it affect them in anyway?

I don’t think it is only the K-pop indusrty but the entertainment industries overall which affects on how people view themselves. Plastic surgery is now a normal thing to do nowadays. I don’t think that having surgery is a bad thing because everyone wants to change one (or more) of their flaws. I always had in mind that if you have the money and can deal the pain during the healing process, then go on right ahead. As for me, i would get plastic surgery :D

I think it`s fine to haveplastic surguy but i just don`t like when it`s taken to the extrem and people stop loking like nomal humans

I personally wouldn’t go for plastic surgery.  I feel as if I’m destroying all the work that God had to do to create me.  But if there are people who feel differently, then that is their prerogative.

Even though I disagree with plastic surgery, it is indeed their choice. Personally, I wish to look the way God made me “flaws” and all. However, if the reason for plastic surgery was due to a medical issue, then I would accept it (ex. chest reduction due to back issues, bad burn scars, accident injuries like having to do facial reconstruction, and such), but if it was for “I wanna look more attractive” reasons then I do not like it at all. People should find their confidence within themselves, not from just their appearence. Beauty is fleeting after all (no matter how much surgery u get. I don’t want some ad to tell me how I should look or if I looked like this, I would be successful, those ads are deceiving, misleading, and skew reality. the end

“To begin, I personally feel that one person does not have the right to judge another if they decide to get plastic surgery. It is an extremely personal decision, and does not affect other people in any negative way.” I agree on this! I don’t mind people having plastic surgery at all, is their choice and if make them feel better about themselves then why not .-. I would do it if I could XD

at the end of the day it has to be there choice.  some get more because they had an injury as child and they want to fix it.

i have to say yes...hyun joong got plastic surgery on his nose before because of an incident when he was a kid

Damn is that really the after picture of him?!

i think plastic surgery is good up to a certain extent. when u change everything and look like a totally different person, then its a bit much. but a little here and there is ok smile as long as the person thinks its the right choice for them smile

Well, it’s their choice, so they should be allowed to do whatever they want with themselves. I personally want plastic surgery

It is their own decision, but I think that God made us the way we are for a reason. We shouldn’t go changing how we look, unless you get in an accident or something and need facial reconstruction surgey...or something like that. lol Each and every one of us is beautiful!

it is completely their own decision, so people should stop pestering them about it~
