Children of Ningin, you are all so devoted to Mother — the Bong Joon-ho film of the same name, that is. Unlike previous films we’ve recently done pin games for, Mother was actually quite the hit among film critics. It shows in this week’s Rottentomatoes score for Mother. More »

Watching Hayao Miyazaki’s Castle in the Sky, I couldn’t help but think of Avatar. In Castle in the Sky, an engineer’s apprentice named Pazu (James Van der Beek), finds a young girl, Sheeta, (Anna Paquin) floating down from the sky, wearing a glowing pendant. Together, they discover both are searching for a legendary floating castle, Laputa, and vow to unravel the mystery of a luminous crystal around Sheeta’s neck. More »

I’m not talking Bong Joon-Ho’s mother per se, but his mystery thriller film Mother that’s out in theaters today starring Korean megastar Won Bin. Manga or manhwa, if it’s lucky enough, lives on beyond the pages and onto the small or the big screen. If it’s even luckier, manga/manhwa makes it to my list of top 5 manga turned live action. More »

Hayao Miyazaki’s Kiki’s Delivery Service does indeed deliver. What, you might ask? 105 minutes of a great animated film that’s a coming-of-age story for a young witch named Kiki. Kiki isn’t a witch like you’d imagine witches to be. She’s more of a kind-hearted, Glenda from the Wizard of Oz type of witch. More »

Ponyo is to Hayao Miyazaki as Little Mermaid is to Disney. Growing up it’s always been a childhood dream of mine to become Ariel from The Little Mermaid — red hair, sea shell bra and all. There wasn’t a pool in sight that I didn’t reenact Ariel emerging from the water to do the famous, fierce Ariel hair-toss-out-of-the-water move. Having just seen Ponyo, I feel like I ought to take back all those embarrassing childhood memories. More »

Everyone let out a big sigh, because Chuno Episode 16 is still not fully subbed. I think I shall give it another day or two before I delve into the episode without about 20% of the subtitles. Hopefully that won’t be the case. More »
