When I first started reading Yankee-kun to Meganee-chan last year, I wasn’t impressed at all. The art wasn’t that great and the story was boring. Something changed though. I recently re-read the first chapters and caught up to the most recent chapter and for some reason everything seemed better. While the beginning was still weak, it gets a lot better after. More »

The 2 hours I spent watching Gurren Lagann Movie Lagann-Hen were the best 2 hours of my life. The wait for the DVDs to come out was worth it. If anything, it made the movie even better. While the movie wouldn’t be too spectacular if I watched it right after the series. Revisiting it a few years later was a good reminder on why Gurren Lagann was so good. It’s not just a simple re-hash either. More »

I was really excited for Katanagatari’s first episode, and when it finally came out it didn’t really meet my expectations. Even though I knew nothing about it besides the pretty pictures I was really expecting more out of this. The first episode was still good. My biggest complaint was the dialogue. There was just way too much of it. I was so hyped up for a big action scene, but in so many cases they just continued with more talking. And more talking. More »

Episode three of Durarara was just plain awesome. When someone falcon punches another guy out of his clothes, you know that it’s something special. The scene where the bartender guy shows up was definitely one of the highlights of this episode. And it just got better with someone jumping off a building to catch a thrown vending machine. Hopefully this does well enough to warrant a second season of Baccano. More »

If there’s an anime I don’t like but would benefit from being a movie, I would probably still not like it. And if it’s an anime I already like, a movie may be unnecessary and I may end up disliking it. Here are my picks for anime that need to be made into movies. More »

Along with Hidamari Sketch x365, Asatte no Houkou and Petite Cossette, Gintama has been licensed by Sentai Filmworks. The only one I really care about is Gintama though. Apparently it’s going to be $40 for Collection 1 which has a run time of 325 minutes. More »

Naburo is an Indonesian version of Naruto. Some scanlator kindly translated the first volume so us non-Indonesian readers can appreciate the story. Otherwise we would have to make do with the beautiful art. Even after being translated, I don’t really understand the story. Obviously it wasn’t meant for lesser minds like mine to comprehend. The owl in Sora no Woto is an actual owl that can flatten itself. I thought it was just an exaggeration of how scared it was. I guess it was obvious since they never used any generic anime style expressions like a sweat drop or black lines down the face. Seeing an actual owl flatten itself like that is kinda creepy. More »

I tried to hate it. I was skeptical of the first episode thinking how long it would take before it devolves into moeblob crap. Although I usually prefer anime with explosions and lasers, this was interesting to watch. While watching the second episode, I tried to look as angry as I could but some parts forced me to break a smile. Although one thing really annoyed me. More »

I had no idea what to expect from Ookamikakushi, but it was incredibly boring and made me uncomfortable. The main character is some glasses guy who looks like a girl. Most of the first episode was about how everyone loves the glasses guy so much. I don’t remember his name but he is the only character with glasses besides his dad and some other character in the background. Aside from the first and last few minutes, everyone is always blushing and almost everything about the show felt generic. A lot of anime can fall under this description but it feels like such a waste when the design for some of the costumes look so cool. The last couple of minutes made me interested enough to see if it gets better though.

I don’t know how I never knew about this, but there’s going to be a movie about the first season of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. And it’s not going to be a simple rehash either. I can’t wait for my loli version of DBZ! I don’t even really remember the story from the first season. I just remember the kamehamehas, spirit bombs and heat seeking lasers that were obviously stolen from Piccolo. And while the psp game doesn’t look like anything special, it’s still Nanoha. I’m definitely going to want to play it. I’m imagining DBZ Budokai gameplay and blowing up planets. All I need now is a shmup game with Nanoha.

Black Rock Shooter is a character designed by Huke which inspired the song named after her. Although the voice in the song is Hatsune Miku, they’re not the same character. Which is a mistake many people make, including myself. There’s also an anime being made with a pilot edition already released. And it looks great. More »

So this was a pretty boring show. That’s what I thought for the first few minutes of the episode. Then a little girl got kidnapped which was completely unexpected and it got slightly more interesting. And then some headless horsewoman grim reaper shows up. That’s when I really woke up. It had a really slow start, but this series looks pretty interesting now. The opening is really nice too, done in a Baccano! style. It didn’t make a strong impression the same way the first episode of Baccano! did. More »

The first anime from the winter season I watched is Sora no Woto. It was not as bad as I thought it would be, and I was expecting complete crap. It kept reminding me of K-on, probably because the art style is pretty much identical to K-on. The main character also seems to have inherited some of Yui’s (from K-on) traits. This is worth picking up though. More »

I recently marathoned the entire Majin Tantei Nou Gami Neuro manga and it was pretty good. I watched the anime but not the entire series so I don’t know where that was good or bad. I don’t see how they can compress the plot of the manga into 25 episodes though. I really like the art in the manga although the anime has a more mainstream look. It could be a bit plain at times, but some of the pages are very good. More »

Alot of great/well known anime have been based on a light novel. Series such as Toradora, To Aru Majutsu no Index, Bakemonogatari, Baccano all started as a light novel. Translations for the original novels are available for some series at Baka-tsuki but most of them have little to no progress. Still, it gives hope that someday I’ll be able to read the original stories. Even if I didn’t like the anime for some series such as Kaze no Stigma or Shakugan no Shana maybe the source was a lot better. Some of the best anime have also come from light novels More »

Based on nothing other than a single picture and short summary, nothing really looks promising except for Katanagatari, Nodame Cantabile, Legend of Koizumi and Fate/Stay Night. I’m usually wrong about this though and there’s always a few other shows that are really good, just not from a glance. More »

The “Legend of Koizumi” or “Mudazumo Naki Kaikaku” is a manga about the 89th Prime Minister of Japan, Junichiro Koizumi. The first chapter is about his mahjong battle against George Bush Jr. Things get crazier from there. Later on he battles against the more competent George Bush Sr. and then the dirty fighting Kim Jong Il. He also tag team battles with Aso Taro. I haven’t gotten any further than that but things seem like they just get more ridiculous. More »

After finishing Umineko Episode 5, I was a bit disappointed that Battler and his cape didn’t show up. I guess it’s in episode 6? Battler was just some guy in a suit that cried a lot. But with a cape? First impression he gives me is that he’s going to beat my face in. And just look at other caped characters. More »

My top five anime for the decade. It was pretty difficult deciding which anime I liked the most. These are pretty easy to get into and shows some of the best of what anime has to offer. Even people who don’t like anime much should be able to enjoy these because they’re so good. More »
