Sure, with our End of the Year Special we’ve been giving you all the highlights of the year in Asian entertainment, but what about actual top blog posts of the year? Based on search engine results, the following are the Top 10 Ningin Stories of 2009. More »

Out of all the Asian singers to debut in America, Far East Movement started out as the most quietly promoted, but quickly gained momentum with nationwide radio play as well as becoming a menu staple to clubs everywhere. More »

What’s a Jinra to do when she gets lonely in the Ningin offices? In times like these I just ring up my close personal ABDC/SYTYCD dancer friends and invite them over to entertain me. One particular boring day, I had Di “Moon” Zhang, Hokuto “Hok” Konishi (Quest Crew) and Phillip “PacMan” Chbeep just completely annihilate the office with their precisely choreographed tutting, popping, locking moves. It’s so hard being me. More »

Not to distract anyone from the new season premiere of America’s Best Dance Crew, but there’s actually a hip hop dance competition that tends overshadow ABDC in terms of international reach and audience. Think of it as the hip hop dance olympics. More »

…And on the seventh day, God rested. And then watched the new season of MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew. According to the new promo video featuring Quest Crew, the previous season’s winning crew/my cousin’s roomates, season 4 of ABDC will now broadcast on MTV on Sunday nights at 9 p.m. PST/8 p.m. CST. The new season’s competing crews have been announced on MTV, and judging by descriptions, this season’s gonna be a toughy. Check out the new ABDC promo: More »

As you may (or probably may not) have noticed, I didn’t cover the ABDC finale because of the JYP Tour in LA, but I did hook us up with a guest blog/commentary from our friends at BakitWhy. Please join me in welcoming and thanking Jonathan Hernandez!

Quest Crew and Beat Freaks were in it to win, but there can be only one winner of Randy Jackson’s America’s Best Dance Crew. All nine original competing crews came back to participate in tonight’s finale. Seeing these crews again reminded me that none of them made it easy for us, each crew in their own way represented the best. The audience was filled with anticipation on who the voter’s would give the title to. Which team would join the ranks of Jabbawockeez and Super Crew greatness? More »

Although I can’t speak on behalf of everyone, it seems that most people are fairly divided when it comes to Quest Crew and Beat Freaks. Actually, perhaps “divided” is not the most appropriate word as rather than really favoring one over the other, a lot of people love both crews. And why not? There are a myriad of reasons to love either crew, and here are just a few reasons why your vote should go to Quest Crew: More »

I’ve stopped counting how many times Mario Lopez has said, “Whoa-ho, Quest Crew… is on a quest!” Dimple’s overdone pun may be annoying, but it’s true. Although Quest Crew has comedy and good times down pat—just try to interview these guys without getting sucked into random and silly tangents, specifically by Dom—this is no careless road trip. These boys are on a mission. More »

The season finale of America’s Best Dance Crew is upon us! Who is it going to be, Beat Freaks or Quest Crew? This season, I’m freaking the vote and it’s not just because I have a vagina. I sincerely believe in the Beat Freaks. While it’s beyond me why anyone would need more than one reason why they should freak the vote, I’ve come up with a list of reasons why you should vote for Beat Freaks: More »

It really seems like it was only yesterday when the Beat Freaks’ Seven Super Heroes swooped into America’s Best Dance Crew. Week after week, these steel tempered bgirls not only set the standard for their fellow competitors, but also challenged and defied mainstream portrayals of women. Beyond season three, the Beat Freaks have secured a meaty chapter in ABDC history as the first all-female crew to contend for the championship. More than that, they could very well be the first all-female crew to take home the spoils of a hot ABDC battle. More »

When watching the second-to-last episode of ABDC season 3, I became sad. We are one episode away from knowing who America will vote best, but can I really live with no more shows until season 4? I am going to be in ABDC withdrawal! How will I get my fix for Quest Crew and Beat Freaks?
Either of these spectacular teams is game, so right now voting is so important… We know from season one that when you don’t vote (*cough* Kabamodern *cough*) then your team might not have enough support. SO, VOTE! One crew secured a spot for next week’s finale: Beat Freaks As usual, this left the other two teams to compete for a spot: Quest Crew vs. Fly Khicks. More »

Even in the thick of a focused and meditative air, the energy was still raring high whilst the performers jiggled and giggled their anxieties out of their bones backstage.
As we mentioned in the playlist recap, Beat Freaks, Quest Crew and Fly Khicks all had the same challenge: integrate five different hip hop moves into the same bloated mastermix of five songs. Though I’ve enjoyed this season, I was—on the whole—pretty underwhelmed by the entire spectacle of season three. However, tonight’s face off between Quest Crew and Beat Freaks thoroughly quenched my thirst for a real throw down. More »

Hip Hop Decathlon…? Before I start whining, it’s not just me. Quest Crew’s Dom (aka D-Trix) saw it fit to point this out, too: you know a decathlon consists of ten different events, right? Well, if you didn’t know, now you do. But whoever comes up with the ABDC episode challenges should know better. Five challenges ≠ decathlon. Sigh… all vocabulary policing aside… More »

Thanks to the fine folks of Freak the Vote, we will be giving away autographed Beat Freaks prizes to five lucky users. That’s right, we’re finally going to satiate that ABDC autograph lust of yours. All you’ve got to do is send a PM (private message) to freakthevote:
Subject: Get freaky! Message:”I promise to Freak The Vote for the Beat Freaks!”
And that’s it, ladies and gents. Please follow the rules; if you don’t, your entry will be null and void. Please remember that in order to send private messages on Ningin, you must sign up for an account. More »

While there are only three official winners, congratulations are due for all of the performers of Kollaboration 9. While some performances weren’t as strong as others, the whole night was nevertheless an enjoyable showcase of a broad range of talents—from magic, to comedy, to dance, to singing. And, of course, the cherry topper: BoA headlining with a performance of “Eat You Up,” which was followed up with a bonus performance of “Look Who’s Talking.” More »

In part one of Ningin’s Justin Chon interview, we learned about his father—a former South Korean actor—and got an idea of both of their approaches to tackling roles and acting in general. In part two, we will learn more about his new drama-packed film, as well as get a glimpse of this inspired film buff’s all-time favorites in the industry. More »
