From Girlybubble: Early last month, Blythe Theater released Part 1 of their Blythe manga series, which is part of this year’s Blythe 9th Anniversary Charity Exhibition called Manga Girls Inspiration. They introduced us to Marabelle Melody, who seems like a normal girl, but really, she is a superhero. More »

From Girlybubble: I don’t know what it is about cute nondescript animated Japanese characters that makes me love them so much. Is it the fact that this video features a ‘thing’ with a faucet as a head? Or another ‘thing’ with a telephone for a head? Quite possibly. Aside from that, all I can gather is that one of them has attachment issues. Any more words I could use to describe the cuteness of this video (or the video itself) is kind of useless. Just watch: More »

From Girlybubble: In the spirit of the upcoming Easter holiday, I present to you one of my favorite animated shorts ever: the I Love Egg song. Why yes, it is exactly what you think it is — a long song dedicated to eggs. It’s also geared to get more Korean children to eat eggs. The song is also available in English but since I discovered the Korean version first, the Korean version has my egg lovin’ heart. More »

Ponyo is to Hayao Miyazaki as Little Mermaid is to Disney. Growing up it’s always been a childhood dream of mine to become Ariel from The Little Mermaid — red hair, sea shell bra and all. There wasn’t a pool in sight that I didn’t reenact Ariel emerging from the water to do the famous, fierce Ariel hair-toss-out-of-the-water move. Having just seen Ponyo, I feel like I ought to take back all those embarrassing childhood memories. More »

It seems Ayumi Hamasaki helped Asada Mao win the silver medal at the Vancouver Olympics. She sent an autographed cd to Mao before the games and gave her encouraging words “Thank you for your courage and passion”. Being a fan of Ayumi, Mao took it to heart and it helped her calm down for her performance. More »

M. Night Shyamalan is the director for the upcoming The Last Airbender movie which is based off of Nickelodeon’s beloved animation Avatar. Yes, we are scared of how the movie will turn out with the issues of the casting of actors/actresses, but let’s put that aside and have faith in Shyamalan’s directing ability. More »

Remember that one cartoon back in 2001 about a samurai who is thrown into the future and wanders around, looking for a way back into the past? Well, it seems there are plans for the series to have a feature film with J.J. Abrams (Star Trek film) as the producer. More »

Vampires. The sexy dead. Before young girls in their teens corrupted vampires into emo love interests, vampires were cool. They were sexy, scary, alluring and down right evil. Western movies don’t have the monopoly on Vampire flicks. In fact Japan does a darn good job of freaking people out with its own versions of animated vampires. So I present to you readers, five animated Vampire movies to eat popcorn to. More »

Imagine a world in which humans coexist harmoniously with androids. It’d be a world in which I’d never have to clean my room ever again or be that friend you call at 3 a.m. to pick you up when you’re drunk because that’s what my android is for. Unfortunately for you and me, this is not our world but that of Astro Boy’s. If you’ve been living under a rock these past few weeks, you’ll know that this Friday will be the theatrical release of the new CGI version of the popular anime, by the same name. Notably, is it highly regarded as the classic anime series that first launched anime into existence. How could we not have an Astro Boy pin game? More »

I guess it is no surprise that Japan’s anime industry is suffering, given the current economic situation. The increased availability of downloading free episodes and movies on the internet does not help the situation either. More »

I’m sure you guys know about the upcoming movie, Avatar: The Last Airbender. Some of you are excited to see the movie and some of you are dreading it for various reasons. I just hope the movie turns out as great as the released ‘poster’ picture on the left. More »
In season one of Avatar: The Last Airbender, the roles were pretty much defined when it came to good and evil: all elements that weren’t fire and the Fire Nation, respectively. Despite Zuko being exiled from the Fire Nation, he was pretty much running amok all over the globe, obsessively chasing the Aang Gang in order to redeem himself. However, knowing that there were two solid seasons to follow, I had suspicions that Zuko was much more than he seemed—perhaps a Byronic hero of sorts—and season two teased this out well. More than that, it confirms that Aang and Zuko are much more alike than traditional storytelling would have us think: they’re two heads of a coin spinning along parallel roads to the same destination. During Avatar: The Last Airbender’s original syndication from 2005-2008, I was pretty much in the dark about the Nickelodeon cartoon. For one, I pretty much didn’t watch t.v. during college—save for the internet feed and the shows I was a die hard fan of—and when I finally did hear about Avatar, I immediately brushed it off as a lame attempt at trying to adopt an anime flavor. Most importantly, knowing that it was an American production about an Asian-centric fantasy world, I wasn’t exactly feaning’ to know more about it; the alarm that went off in my head was similar to, “Well, there goes Disney effing up another culture, yet again…” Fail. Having finally seen the show, however, I can safely say it’s totally shut my trap: the cartoon is good—scratch that, it’s amazing—and I only wish it was around when I was growing up. More »
