From Girlybubble: Aside from telling me I’m my mother’s most beautiful daughter (her only daughter), my mother tells me she loves me often. Looking at these Japanese bento box art scans from “Waku Waku Kyaracuta No Obentou” (Exciting Character Bentos), I find this hard to believe. How can you tell your own daughter you love her, knowing full well that you sent her off to private school in the early 90s with Lunchables for lunch almost daily? More »

From Girlybubble: Here’s an event I’d have to be sitting for/not operating heavy machinery during: The Hello Kitty “Three Apples” exhibition opening Oct. 23 at Royal/T in LA. As an exhibition held in honor of of Hello Kitty’s 35th anniversary, my inability to effectively handle cute-overload could be problematic. That’s 35 years of Hello Kitty cute-ness! I can barely handle myself being so cute, and I’m only 24. More »

From Ziggytek: About a months ago the giant model of the classic Rx-78-2 Gundam was introduced to the public and towered over Tokyo but now the giant has been lit and it looks amazing. Take a peek at some of the pictures after the break. More »

Generally it takes a lot of planning on post-its to come up with a college senior project. In the case of of Bang-yao Liu and his senior project at Savannah College of Art, a whopping 6,000 post-it notes were used…not to plan but to be featured as part of his pixelized stop motion short film. In addition to the 6,000 post-its used, the project took 3 months of planning and 4 days shooting to complete. More »

Lots of interesting news for today so I’m posting more than my usual four. Here’s a game where the goal is to date disfigured girls. Talk about messed up. This probably says something about how messed up Japanese culture has become. Of course watch this game become really popular too.

Today marks one week since I started doing this daily favorites feature on Ningin. So I got a nice little email from the boss today saying that I’m doing great. It’s nice to be appreciated. I gotta say it’s a pretty easy job that I’d probably do anyway. Anyway, on to the theme for today. I’ve noticed lots of art related articles in today’s feeds. So today we’re going with an art theme. First is this set of photos about restroom signs. It’s part of some online challenge to come up with funny restroom signs. There’s TONS of entries and all of them pretty funny. I recommend clicking on the thumbnail link since there’s so many photos.

Last Tuesday, I got the chance to catch up with Quest Crew after the live taping of episode two. If goes without saying that all the members of Quest Crew are extremely talented individuals, but after speaking with them, I can safely add a few things more to the list: hilarious, friendly, humble, fun-loving, down to earth, determined, adorably boyish—okay, I’ll stop there… More »

Holy Tokyo Drift! That’s Sung Kang—bigger than life. This mural’s on the wall of Taiwan-based Jump Shoes’ flagship store in SoHo. But how did it get there? Meet David Foox—a New Zealand artist with an eye for Asian symbolism. Plus, see Sung Kang’s last three short films with Jump Shoes and Arowana Films. More »

Samuel Jamier is a nonfictional character. For the most part, he inhabits the premises of a male body, conceived in Incheon, South Korea, and brought up in Brittany, France. He traversed and inhabited/investigated various territories, cities, bodies, societal spaces: Paris, London, Tokyo, Seoul, New York - for the time being. He formally (and perhaps accidentally) studied English literature and philosophy, which are still central to his reflection(s). His activities and affectivity are largely invested in/absorbed by the fields/practices of literature, cinema, history and arts in the widest sense of the term. He speaks a few languages, none of them overly well, but hey…

During the day, Sam works for The Korea Society as a senior program officer for the Contemporary Issues and Corporate Affairs programming areas. He has also been running The Korea Society movie blog since December 2006. Sam is currently at work on an essay about Korean cinema and a first work of fiction set in 1920s Shanghai.

At night, other things happen…

And that’s about it. More »

At NYAF 2008, I had the pleasure of meeting many artists in the artist alley. I myself am an artist so it was definitely exciting to see all the different works of art on sale and on display. I must say, I was very impressed. If I wasn’t so strapped for cash, I would’ve bought some prints (if the T.M.Revolution booth wasn’t there)! Some of these artists appear at more anime conventions than NYAF, of course. At AnimeNext 2008, I remember seeing quite a few of these artists in the artist alley. It’s amazing to see the talent in action as many artists tend to take commissions right on the spot and draw right in front of you. There were people who made pins, prints, hats, plushies and more. The amount of different mediums used (such as digital, colored pencils, markers) was amazing. Each artist put their own twist onto their favorite anime/manga characters and sold away!

Although each of these artists may be different, all of them gather at anime conventions yearly to draw for a common interest. I personally had the pleasure to briefly interview a few of the artists. As I interviewed these artists, I realized I can relate in so many ways! Even though the artists were asked such similar questions, their own personality shows. In a way, it clears who the person is “behind the mask” so to speak. More »

Marking oneself with a permanent tattoo is a decision that not many “sober people” take lightly. There are some ground rules that even those with tattoo-friendly lifestyles follow and the basic guideline is about choosing wisely when it comes to this form of self expression. With so much to choose from and many regrets to experience if it goes wrong is a good reason to the time to Know your design. Picking a Dragon or Tiger because just because it’s cool is no fly by night option. Your design will still be there in the morning, and every morning thereafter, so you have to grin and bare it if your tiger came out like Tigger instead.  Be aware of your artists other clients. Are they happy with their products? Did the artist over touch up appointment? Nothing is worse than a smudgey or faded tattoo.

Tattoo Taboo… the big No No of getting someone elses name tattoo’ed on your body. Maybe your highschool sweetheart, or your first love next to your heart for ever more is nice in theory but we always hear that the practice is not the wisest. What if the person breaks up with you? Can we learn anything from Angelina’s “BillyBob” while now she is married to Brad? More »
