He’s not a celebrity, just a regular Rhode Island guy. But what he has to say about race in America today is funny, hard-hitting, and well worth a read. He’s Frank Y. Pak Agostinelli, founder of asiansofmixedrace.com. With Frank, what you see is what you get. Everything about him, from his name to his “Random Thoughts of an Angry Half-Asian Man,” sets a powerful example of self-acceptance.
I wanted to learn more about the mixed-race experience because of my own half-white, half-Korean children. A mixed-Asian friend introduced me to Frank and the awesome content of his site. In the first part of this interview, you’ll get to know Frank. Stay tuned for Part 2, which features more about his site, including the fascinating issues and celebrities covered there. More »
It was Saturday night, at my weekend waitressing job. I saw them at the host booth, and hoped they would end up in my section. It was slow, and I needed another table. But I also wanted a chance to say “Hi.” It’s not every day that you see a mixed Asian family in Clermont County, Ohio. More »
You never know what to expect with musical theatre. From my experience production musicals usually involve me with my eyes winced shut, a very deep held breath, and a serious hope for the best attitude. Incidentally though, I have many fears of catchy revival tunes infectiously staying in my head. It is usually because I am one of those that find themselves singing along to music no one else hears … and no one likes people who break out into song on the subway (no matter how on key they are). Despite my fears I am no stranger to theater and seen a good-fair share of Broadway/off-Broadway productions. When the opportunity rose to see a Musical-Comedy inspired by Oklahoma, but written in the point-of-view of a Asian female, my interest was peaked. More »

The last blog in our 7 Days, 7 New Blogs event isn’t what you would normally expect from a blog. It’s more a community project that started alone, then joined Ningin for a larger reach. The Asian Heroes Blog profiles successful Asians worthy of being role models. There’s already 40+ profiles written, so plenty to read and explore! Here’s more from the project founder, Stephen Chen:
Warren Buffet said, “Tell me who your heroes are and I’ll tell you how you’ll turn out to be.”
Some friends and I took this to heart and with we soon realized there is a real opportunity to highlight the success stories of Asian heroes. They are our catalysts for change, recognizing possibilities and have the courage to take on risk; to realize that people are most in danger of not being what they might have been.
We hope you will read this blog, be introduced to the titans of the world, be inspired to go out and innovate, and lastly, to discover the great potential of being someone else’s hero.
Along the way, I encourage you to write back and let me know about your progress. I am always available at stephenchen@ningin.com.

Everyday we are sure to hear terms like Viral Videos, Web Episodes, and Cyber Blogging. These are all common day words used by the most ordinary people. The Internet revolution has changed the way people seek entertainment in today’s world.
Enter the stylish, Shyaporn Theerakulstit (Tearahgunsehtaet) a YouTube comedian that is anything but a fly by night talent.
Ever the modest gentleman, he lives up to his nickname “Shy” and admits his videos are no Film Phenomenon. This charming actor proves he is not just another pretty face, as his videos are more than the commonplace, resentful drama web-cam video blog dairies, (called vlogs), but humorous sketches, that sometimes have an ethnic twist. He is best known for his “500 impressions in 2 minutes” video, he then taught us that kittens can fly, documented the daily grind of an unemployed hitman and wrote a zombie musical. He even has represented the only Asian super-friend and put him at the forefront of one of his videos. Never one to loose a clever sketch idea he keeps them on a mirror using dry erase marker. Be assured that each upcoming Holiday there will be another one of his immensely enjoyable videos premiering on YouTube. With such a diverse profile like this, you can easily see Shyaporn is a brilliant artist that is as sophisticated as he is creative. More »

Ciao a Tutti! MiaCarla here, number five in the new seven of the Ningin newbies! How very exciting to be apart of this fine blogging bunch. As an Italian-American born and raised in Brooklyn NY, I am not your average Asian media enthusiast … but from the first influences of 80’s anime and 90’s Korean Pop, there has always been a drive in me to aid Asian Media acceptance in the western mainstream. Now apart of this global campaign to seek out kindred, as well as diverse fans, to bring them together under one banner. Showing people that, the many facets, of Asian media do not have to be separated by ethnicity’s, language or genre. More »

This past weekend I blogged about FHM Magazine and incited a few lively comments among the Ningin readers about how Asian women tend to be more sexualized than Asian men. Well, apparently some sexy Pinoys want to prove them wrong. Cosmopolitan magazine in the Philippines will feature 69 shirtless hunks in this month’s issue of “Cosmopolitan Bachelor Bash 2008“. Gracing the cover of the centerfold is Darak Ramsay, who’s half-Pinoy/half-British. The list of all the names of the 69 models can be found here. God, my nose is bleeding at the mention of this already! By the way, why are there 69 models and not 67 or 60? Any sexual innuendo here? More »
Yes, it’s the Giant White Girl of Ningin, cheesin’ with yet another Asian celebrity. How did I get to meet Kal Penn? At a Democratic voter-registration rally. He, like several other notable Asian-American actors and directors, is putting his clout behind Barack Obama’s campaign. My son, hiding from the camera, was less enthusiastic. Sorry, Kal. He’ll love your movies someday….but he better not repeat the dirty jokes.
