If you want to see new video games, there’s E3. If you want to see new Apple products, there’s MacWorld. From Girlybubble: I recently had a conversation with someone from New York City where I had to explain the nature of my car-commuting California lifestyle. Part of that lifestyle deems it unnecessary for me to own an iPod or MP3 player because I spend most of my time in my car, listening to my car stereo. I want to say that this is because I’m kind of a big deal, but actually, it’s typical here for people to not be pedestrians in Southern California. Looking at this limited edition iRiver Swarovski crystal-studded Hello Kitty mp3 player however, is totally changing my mind about the way I think of MP3 players. More »

For you people who requested BoA in the North Cali area, you’re in luck! BoA is coming to San Francisco, June 28, 2009.The SF Pride festival is quite a huge event, as many people would come to see their favorite artists whether gay or straight. This is a great place to be, since other large pop stars such as Lady Gaga are typically scheduled to perform there. More »

Let’s get one thing straight first: Yes, I live in South Korea, but I’m affiliated with the US military bases scattered around the peninsula, and so I have access to American moola.
With that said, I am now a proud and happy owner of a $2 bill, and I type this with a big smile on my face. See, the military bases do not use pennies except at post offices (thank goodness, I suppose), and $2 are something of a rarity to many people here. Including me. My mother has one, but she refuses to let me have hers. Ever since her blunt refusal, I’ve been dying to have a $2 of my own. More »

Ningin reader Danny Truong sent us this recap of BoA’s visit to the Hollywood Universal City Walk last Saturday…
From early morning, crazy, dedicated BoA fans lined up to get their green wristband for the chance to meet and greet the Asian wonder of the world. The wait was long, but once you got a wristband, you could freely roam with your buddies, shop around the stores, get a bite to eat or meet new fans just as crazy as you are! During the wait, we were shown an advance viewing of the “I Did it for Love”- Making of Video, never seen on the internet before. More »

I’m always looking for music that has a real feel to it. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes I like listening to the type of music where you don’t know the lyrics and you just like the beat; you’re just having a good time dancing and singing along with it. But most of the time, I want the music to move my soul and grab a hold of my heart and make me feel passion – whether it’s from hate, love, or sorrow – running throughout my veins. One day, I came across a musician-producer by the name of Taiyo Na. I bought his album Love Is Growth, which I love. I decided to talk to him about it and about his career. More »
Yesterday, January 6th, the DVD release of the movie Ping Pong Playa was released and made available at Amazon.com, Netflix, and at Barnes n Nobles. You can check for its availability at your local video stores too, because I called my Blockbuster video store and they will have it available for rent on January 6th. I had the pleasure of watching this hilarious movie at this past year’s San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival during March. I was too shy to come down the theater aisle after the movie was over to meet Jimmy Tsai back then. However, our paths crossed once again in the following interview that I had with him. More »
This article is what led me to discover this new Amerasian (1/2 Korean and 1/2 Caucasian I assume) singer. Born Priscilla Natalie Hartranft, she decided to change her last name to her Korean mother’s native name to reflect her Asian heritage. Born in Georgia and after a stint in Korea, she grew up in Pennsylvania. After high school, she was encouraged to expand her musical skills, so she went to Los Angeles, California.
She independently made an album, Priscilla Ahn, and Blue Note Records discovered her talents and took her in to their company. Her next album, A Good Day was released earlier this year, along with her first single, “Dream”. That song’s received more attention when it was used for season four finale of Grey’s Anatomy.
Amazingly, enough, she will actually be on a tour in Seoul, at Hongik University (Hongdae) on December 4, 2008. I actually took the time to listen to a few of her songs and discovered that I like her style. She’s like Norah Jones on the guitar, but better. I like her voice. It’s really pretty. It’s a darn shame that I can’t go to the performance, though. Something called work is my first priority. More »
Several years ago, a video blogger by the name of Josh Wolf was imprisoned for not handing over his video to the federal authorities. The video dealt with the G8 protest in San Francisco, and Wolf wanted to protect the people in the video, so he refused to give the video. He spent seven month in prison before he was released.
His story captured Donna Lee’s attention, and she decided to make a documentary out of it. The documentary is called Adventures of Josh Wolf: Activist Video Blogger. The documentary was shown last month at the Mill Valley Film Festival and received great reviews. This is Lee’s first film project, a project she decided to do for a class.
In the future, she plans to submit this documentary to Korean film festivals next year. Who knows? Maybe we’ll see and hear about this like at Pusan International Film Festival!
Many people are very familiar with Tim Kang’s face from the various Home Depot and Cingular commercials he has done
Tim Kang is a very busy man these days popping into a dozen or so shows on t.v. I have seen him in the t.v. series Ghost Whisperer, Chappelle Show, Law and Order, Third Watch, and The Unit to name a few.
Tim Kang was born in San Francisco, California and he studied acting at Russia’s Moscow Art Theatre School. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Berkeley and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Institute for Advanced Theatre Training at Harvard University
Tim Kang plays as agent Kendall Cho who works for the CBI, California Bureau of Investigation, alongside Simon Baker, the star of the new show The Mentalist. It comes on every Tuesday night at 9pm eastern on CBS. Tim Kang is a regular cast member of The Mentalist and that’s really good, because we need more Asian men beaming into American households on a regular basis. More »
