Legend of the Black Scorpion, aka The Banquet (2006), is something of a cinematic stinger. The shock of experiencing the movie as a not-so-ordinary Hong Kong film, is great. The cast itself is great on it’s own, starring Ziyi Zhang (Memoirs of a Geisha, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Daniel Wu (Protégé, One Nite in Mongkok), Zhou Xun (Perhaps Love, Hollywood Hong Kong) and You Ge (Da Wan, Farewell My Concubine.) To be honest, I did not expect anything good out of The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter. One reason is that I have never seen a Chinese Kung Fu film before. Wait, scratch that. I have never seen any kind of Chinese movies, period. The only ones I have seen in the past are Korean, American, and Japanese. At first, I was a bit afraid that I wouldn’t like the movie. Upcoming movie, The Child’s Eye 3D, is the latest Hong Kong horror film, and the first to ever be produced in 3D. Director Oxide Pang has certainly got a good cast up his sleeve when he made Rainie Yang and Elanne Kwong the lead roles.
