I’m never seriously got into dramas. I have a weak addiction threshold so I was trying to keep my life addiction free. There were a few times when I couldn’t control myself and stuck the needle of kdrama into my veins. Winter Sonata was one of those moments of weakness. I don’t regret the depressing bliss this series caused me. But I thought it was over; a sinful past that I put behind me. Yet I can’t escape it, Winter Sonata is Japan’s favorite tv show. The reminders of that series are everywhere…

Juice boxes are adorable and cute but like all things Japanese, they’ve been reinvented in a whole new way.

Japanese industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa has revamped juice boxes to look like the fruits they contain. So far there are banana, kiwi, strawberry and soybean which feels like “silken tofu skin”. I know I want my hands on those bad boys. More »

Japanese have a knack for making everything adorable and cute. Well these biscuits are no different.

They really do look too good to be real; however, even if they were real, I don’t think I could bring myself to eat something so cute. It’s like eating a puppy! Unfortunately, it’s not revealed who made these cookies or how but I’m tempted to learn how either way.

Here are my favorite ones! Check out Lethiachan for more photos. More »

If the greatest pleasure in life is to receive a love-love bento from a cute anime girl, then the second greatest pleasure must be to receive an anime bento from a real life girl. They’re not all anime-based, but New York resident and online gamer “annathered” has a unique talent - food art. Or maybe it’s “bento sculpture“. Well, whatever it is, it’s amazing, and what’s even cooler is her source material - anime such as Totoro and Moyashimon, games like Bioshock, Half Life 2, Zelda, Katamari, Shadow of the Colossus, and other things like Wall-E and Calvin and Hobbes are among her collection. I finally got the chance to speak to the Beat Freak and former Harajuku Girl Rino Nakasone, and what a great experience it was. In search of the dance flavors that originally inspired her to break out from the mold, the Okinawan-born performer came to Los Angeles ten years ago and has traced out a colorful and accomplished career for herself. What you see on stage is pretty much what you get in person: a boisterous and vibrant personality. What you may not get the chance to see on television, however, is her endless reserve of hearty laughter (and equally enthusiastic arm slaps). Even after only speaking briefly with her, it was apparent that she’s bubbling with warmth and personable energy: More »

My parents came to America thirty years ago—well, my dad came here a little earlier—but for my whole life, it’s just been my mom, my dad and my big brother; the rest of my family still lives in Taiwan. So, when it comes to Chinese New Year, our traditions are a little different, or should I say, flexible.

As children, my brother and I were like any other kid who came from a family that celebrated the lunar new year: we looked forward to 紅包 (hong bao) payday. Or should I say, those red envelopes stuffed with crisp, new bills, which all of my non-Asian friends knew about/were eager to know about; in the spirit of the holiday, I gave them sacks of chocolate coins. As for other Asian kids who had extended family in the states, they made their rounds and collected red envelopes like the tax man from hell. More »

This past Saturday, the Mixr Media family celebrated the holidays at the first Ningin-GirlyBubble Holiday Mixr in New York City!

Our bloggers often work on their own time and far apart, so the Holiday Mixr was a great opportunity for everyone to get together offline. Some of us even met for the first time in person! We shared drinks and karaoke over a yummy Korean dinner of Squid Bokum (spicy!), Budae Jigae and grilled Kalbi. Some of us showed off dance moves straight from the Wonder Girls and BoA. This resulted in some of us getting free dance lessons. More »

Two basic questions reveal much about any animal: What does it eat? Where does it live? Sung Kang’s a breed of his own in the film world, winning fans with roles that shatter Asian stereotypes. He lives in Los Angeles, and he eats, well, some interesting stuff. Since he owns a restaurant, I thought it would be fun to talk chow with Sung. And it was. You won’t believe what he does with ice cream.

Did you miss me? I haven’t been online the last couple of days, thanks to an Ohio hurricane. My whole life, Gulf of Mexico hurricanes have snaked up to the Ohio Valley, but left only torrential rains. This time, Hurricane Ike brought little rain, but wind gusts up to 77 miles per hour. Our power went out, and were it not for the lucky Thai joint, we’d have had no hot food.

Bryan Au is my “health nut” guru that I stumbled across one day via online. I told him what drew me to him was that he cared so much about what kinds of foods people put into their bodies, which is something that concerns me greatly. It’s extremely important due to the high obesity rate that Americans have and the many ailments that they have as well. He has shared his message to help increase the health and lifestyle of all people worldwide. But of course the catch is, you have to WANT to achieve the goal of living as a healthy human being on this earth.

I have one of Bryan’s recipe books, that I have used, I have one of his dvd’s, and I have bought some of the merchandise that he offers on his website. One of my favorite foods of his is the “Tibetan Goji Berries”. The name is funky, but I love them. They replace my want to eat skittles, starbust, and other tangy candies that are full of all that unhealthy processesed stuff. It does take a while for you to get used to though. Eating more raw foods also gives you in the long-run a younger appearance. So think of that guys! All that fast food, greasy foods, processed foods puts age on you! I still have some transitioning myself into the “healthier” eating lifestyle. I make do with what I have and it’s not hard. For instance, I make my salads now, make my own dressing sometimes, eat raw fruits and vegetable, mostly local growned. I also drink lots of water, no sodas, etc.. Exercising is a plus of course. It all pays off in the end. So be sure to check out Bryan Au’s site (link below), check out his products, and by all means, be healthy, live well! I now introduce to you, Bryan Au. More »

If you thought Nyotaimori (’body sushi’ or the practice of serving sushi on naked women) was weird, wait till you see this feast for the gastronoics! Oh, there’s a male version of Nyotaimori as well called Nantaimori before anyone starts talking about objectification of women. Although, I must admit morality still doesn’t come into play much here either. (Well… I *suppose* if it’s a ridiculously good looking Korean male model with a Rain-esque body, then watcha gonna do right?)

So, as far as I can make out, this practice called “Cannibalism Banquet” is taking body sushi to a whole ‘nother level. Basically, a life size replica of a human body is made and stuffed piñata style with food covered in red sauce, for authentic blood lickingness. Ewk, I hope that doesn’t mean tastingness too… Then it’s wheeled out to you on a hospital operation table. More »
