Manga or manhwa, if it’s lucky enough, lives on beyond the pages and onto the small or the big screen. If it’s even luckier, manga/manhwa makes it to my list of top 5 manga turned live action. More »

I’m not too familiar with any Chinese manhua (Chinese manga) — the only one I have ever read is Ravages of Time. Manhua is pretty much Chinese comics. I always thought Korean comics were called the same thing, but I recently noticed that they’re actually called manhwa. Not a big difference, they’re all comics either way. I don’t know why manga seems to be the most popular, but Ravages of Time is easily better than most manga I have read. The artwork is incredibly detailed and fits the story very well. The fight scenes would also look amazing if they were animated. I had a problem with the story though. More »

Manga, or Japanese comics is often the backbone for a lot of the things we love in Asian pop culture. Manga often leads to anime series, anime series leads to live action movies or…Ningin editorial specials called Manga Mania! For the next few days, we’ll be placing the focus on manga: More »

BANG! You hear that? That was what January sounded like when it started. A lot of great stuff happened this month! On the editorial side, January featured an interview with comedian Steve Byrne, The New Year’s Resolution Special and Japan Film Royale! with Rekuru. We also launched HTCYou a new community for HTC and Android enthusiasts. Let’s not forget about Mixr League Gaming, Ningin’s triumphant win over Wirebot and BlitzKuTek, the kick off of the MLG Ladder, Battle of the Sexes and the recent Mixr bloggers vs. Mixr users matches. There’s no hope for me whatsoever. This Awesome Blog Post Overload Syndrome (ABPOS) is deeming itself to be a chronic condition. I’m having a really hard time keeping in awesome blog posts — they just keep coming out. I tried herbal tea and it still doesn’t help my situation. My doctor says that the only relief I can receive right now is if you take a moment to read the awesome blog posts that came out last week. More »

Hey Upper-Ninginsiders. Manhwa artist Hye Kyung Baek recently created a Gossip Girl manhwa and it’s absolutely crazy. Crazy as in, the entire plot is rearranged so that initially all the wrong couples are paired off together. Example? Blair Waldorf and Dan. The horror! Aside from all the wrong pairings, the characters demonstrate more overt sexuality than they do on the actual TV show. I’m kind of interested in checking this out as it seems to be everything I happen to enjoy about manga/manhwa; racy and fast-paced. More »

I love to read manga. You can say that mangas are my bibles (but don’t worry, I’m not that obssessive). The vast variety of stories and styles can attract almost anyone to read them. So I tried to vary my top manga choices for 2009 and this is what I came up with. More »

Vampires are one of my favorite subjects to read about. From short stories to novels to comics, I’ll read anything that involves vampires (though oddly enough, I haven’t read the Twilight series yet). So I would like to give you my top 3 vampire mangas that made an impression on me for the genres they represent. More »
Manhwa, by the way, is a blanket term for Korean comics, comic books (aka mangas), and animated cartoons. Moving on. According to Korea Times, “[t]he Korea Culture and Content Agency (KOCCA) will hold the 2009 Korean Comics Special Exhibition Feb. 2-7 at the Korean Culture Centre in Paris, France, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the genre”.
I guess if you’re in Paris vicinity, go check it out! Personally, I’m not a fan of Korean manhwa (I’ve been Japanised too much), but it has its merits! One day, I’ll get into them. I did like Demon Diary if that counts, haha. But 100 years? Wow. I obviously do not know my Korean manhwa history!
Literary Vampires have evolved since Lord Ruthven’s account was dictated to us by the great John Polidori. Numerous mediums have been used to interpret these immortal creatures of the night. HBO’s TrueBlood, Lifetime’s Blood Ties, and CBS’s Moonlight are just some of the very recent TV adaptations. Who is to say what attracts us to the paranormal and the preternatural urges of the Vampires world. These newer Manga/Anime constructions give us more fantasy than fear as we would gladly give our necks over to the clear eyed, ruby lipped fangs.
In “Model” (모델), a Manhwa (Korean for Manga), by Lee So-young (이소영) we follow a young exchange student named Jae; a Korean girl currently studying art in the UK. Over seven volumes Jae takes a thrilling and romantic journey when she meets a beautiful man name Michael and makes a pact with him in order to paint his portrait. In the chapters of these ethereal graphics, we are trapped inside Jae visions and witness her horrors; which at times coincide with her desires. Is Jae swept away or is Jae on a downward path into hell? Can you really trust the word of a vampire or is she making a deal with the devil? More »
