Leave it to the motherland (of my parents) to cash in on the Twilight franchise with its Takipsilim (Tagalog for ’sunset’) telenovela, slated to appear February 2009. I once tried to watch “Ako si Kim Sam Soon,” the remake of the widely popular “My Name is Kim Sam Soon” (내 이름은 김삼순) but it was just wrong.

While telenovela remakes are certainly nothing new for Philippine television, I don’t think think I’ll be able stomach this one. Not because I’m thatmuch of a fan — I’m just a firm believer in leaving something already cheesy, cheesy. A Filipino telenovela will only elevate the level of cheesiness. It’s like I already know that I’m silly for being suckered into the cheese, but do you really have to remind me with this telenovela? Let me enjoy the cheese in peace! Charice started singing at age four; her “concert debut” was at a Balibago basketball game at age seven. Wanting to earn income to help Momma, young Charice began working the Filipino singing-contest circuit soon after. “Even if the prizes are $50 or $10, it’s big money to us,” she told reporters.

Somebody give me a lighter. Journey, the ultimate stadium-rock band, has just taken the stage. Oh, the guitar solos…the nostalgia. But these days, there’s a different face mixed in with the aging Frisco white guys. It’s the boyishly cute mug of Arnel Pineda, recently emigrated from the Philippines, who’s now the lead singer of the band. His story’s something of a rock-and-roll fairy tale.
