Ponyo is to Hayao Miyazaki as Little Mermaid is to Disney. Growing up it’s always been a childhood dream of mine to become Ariel from The Little Mermaid — red hair, sea shell bra and all. There wasn’t a pool in sight that I didn’t reenact Ariel emerging from the water to do the famous, fierce Ariel hair-toss-out-of-the-water move. Having just seen Ponyo, I feel like I ought to take back all those embarrassing childhood memories. More »

Seems that most of you don’t have much faith in the great master of anime movies, Hayao Miyazaki. Rottentomatoes gave it a score of 95%! Let this be a lesson to those that doubted him. Not all of his movies make it to the States, but of the ones that do, they’re usually epic! Ponyo may not be his best ever, but the man lives up to a different standard of excellence where even his mediocre works are far and away better than most can put together. It’s Miyazaki’s world and we’re all just living in it. Those that have seen his movies probably would love that notion. More »

I say masterpiece because that’s the only thing the guy knows how to make, just look at Howl’s Moving Castle, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and on and on. This plot is about a mermaid, Ponyo, who wants to become fully human and falls in love with a boy during the process of saving the world. Well, that’s the essence of it. Sounds like Independence Day meets The Little Mermaid, but not quite. Anyway, I’m sure it’ll be an instant classic. More »
