This week Peter Ho-Sun Chan’s The Warlords fought its way into American theaters, and judging from this week’s Rottentomatoes score, it was a decent victory closing in at 61%. For the movie at least. The general Rottentomatoes consensus states: “Slightly stodgy historical Chinese epic with impressive battles.” It’s a different story for The Warlords pin game players. More »

The title of Peter Ho-Sun Chan’s “The Warlords” alone was evidence enough that this epic Chinese period film was going to be a dudes-only film, but that didn’t stop me. Three reasons: Takeshi Kaneshiro, Jet Li and Andy Lau. As most Hong Kong film fans know, they are something of a trinity. Such is the case in The Warlords as the story revolves around a bromance portrayed by the trinity. A more complicated Three Musketeers comes to mind. More »

Peter Ho-Sun Chan’s The Warlords is waging war (opening) in theaters this Friday, April 2. Ninginers, it’s up to you to aid The Warlords into victory, by playing The Warlords pin game. The Warlords stars Jet Li as General Pang, who barely survives a brutal massacre of his fellow soldiers by playing dead, and joins a band of bandits led by Er Hu (Andy Lau) and Wu Yang (Takeshi Kaneshiro). After fighting back attackers from an helpless village, the three men take an oath to become “blood brothers,” pledging loyalty to one another until death, but things quickly turn sour and the three men become embroiled in a web of political deceit, and a love triangle between Pang, Er Hu and a beautiful courtesan (Wu Jing-Lei). If someone were to ask me what made my year personally, I’d have to say Ningin. 2009 had it’s share of highs and lows in the world of Asian pop culture and entertainment. Asian artists crossed over, made Hollywood debuts, fought illness and court battles. The best part of 2009 was that we were all present together as a community to experience it all! In summary, this is what happened in 2009 for us. More »

Big plays a major theme in my life. I like to dream big, carry big purses, wear big cocktail rings and over-sized sunglasses. It’s no surprise that for Christmas this year, one of my wishes (I wish big too) is for a surplus of sexy, hot Asian male celebrities under the mistletoe. I’m not talking a simple list of the hottest Asian celebrity dudes ever. I’m talking surplus, as in I might need to take periodic oxygen breaks every now and then. Or surplus, as in…you’re considered famous if you’re a hot Asian male and you’re under the mistletoe with me. More »

It’s safe to say that November, aka Ninja Month, was the most awesome month for Ningin yet. We had 4 specials - Ninja Thanksgiving, Japan-a-thon, Vampire Special, and Gaming Special. We had 4 site launches, Wirebot for gaming, Swandiary for Vampire entertainment, Rekuru for Japanese Entertainment, and most recently, FlauntMe for Beauty. We had some big interviews - Rain, Boom Boom Satellites, and Takeshi Kaneshiro. And course, tons of giveaways, SS501 album+poster, 4minute album+poster, Red Cliff Movie posters, Ninja Assassin Gear, and Xbox + Wii game sytems. There’s also about a dozen Ninja Assassin movie posters sitting here that needs to be given out…later though too many contests running right now! I’m sure I’m forgetting more stuff. But isn’t that kinda a lot?? I hope you guys enjoyed everything! Not sure if we can continue at this pace forever, but there’s still a lot more stuff on the way! More »

Since I went nuts over Red Cliff, the good people here at Ningin (and the good people who work with Takeshi Kaneshiro) allowed me to interview Takeshi Kaneshiro (that’s right, I bolded it twice- can you tell I was excited about this?) For those of you who haven’t been following my Red Cliff posts (shame on you, go read my blog!), Takeshi played a leading role in Red Cliff as famous military strategist Zhuge Liang. Read on for Takeshi on his role in Red Cliff and more. More »

John Woo’s Red Cliff is hardly a new film with the first part released in Asia in 2008, and the second part at the beginning of 2009. On Nov. 18, the 280 minute epic film will appear in American theaters for the first time as a single 150 minute film. With the content cut nearly in half, the story will be much more easily digestible by Western audiences…but is it really worth watching? More »

True, November is Ninja month for Ningin. However, if for some reason I had to replace the ninja theme, I’d go with epic. A lot of epic things are happening this month, and that includes the release of John Woo’s 2-part epic Chinese war film, Red Cliff. Red Cliff is the retelling of the Battle of Red Cliffs, set at the end of the Han Dynasty. It’s also reportedly the most expensive Asian film production of all time — that’s pretty epic. Wanna know what else is epic? The Red Cliff pin game. More »

The two part Chinese epic war film Red Cliff, written and directed by John Woo, will be coming to a theatre near you on November 18th as a single 150 minute film. If you love Chinese history but don’t have the time or patience to sit through the 280 minute original (unreleased in the US), this movie is a must see. More »

It’s almost time for the most romantic time of the year: Valentine’s Day. Some of us will either treat or be treated to a most relaxing and pleasurable day. And some of us will spend it alone—wondering what in the heck happened to that arrow that cupid was supposed to hit us with?! During this special time of the year, there are many famous people who also celebrate it, and it makes me wonder what it would be like to spend Valentine’s Day with one of my favorite Asian stars… According to media experts (and myself, too!), here are some of the top ideal Valentine’s Day lovers. Gomen ne, I never got around to listing the dramas I’m looking forward to this year (back in the EotY TV Show special), but I finally put together a list of the first-quarter dramas that have caught my eye. Here we go! More »
