Yes, that’s Sung Kang’s face in the mural, part of his collaborative publicity campaign for Jump Shoes. Kind of crazy, huh? If you’re in the New York area, you can hoof over to the Jump Shoes flagship store at 89 Spring St., Soho, and see it for yourself, so large and incredible. I also have another of Sung Kang’s short films. It’s marketing, it’s art, and it’s cool. These are also posted on YouTube. You can make comments here, on YouTube, or on Sung’s blog.

Wayne Wang’s new feature film “The Princess of Nebraska” is hosted in its one hour and 19 minutes entirety on YouTube. At the time of this posting, it was on its way to 200,000 views since it’s debut two weeks ago. View counts on YouTube must be from a single unique IP address and a complete view. So with that in mind, that’s a lot of people who have sat down at their monitors and watched a movie about the identity differences of “New China” Chinese and Chinese-Americans who left “Old China.” (That’s my own take of the film. Wayne Wang’s interpretation, and yours, may be different. -David.)

It’s unclear what kind of business model this will evolve into for online distribution of films. Artistically, Wayne Wang has gotten more people to watch “The Princess of Nebraska” than a similar two-week art house run in LA and NYC could ever bring him. But these are 200,000 unpaid movie tickets. With an estimated quarter million production budget for the film, I’m sure YouTube and Magnolia Pictures will be doing some serious accounting on their returns on investment.

“The Princess of Nebraska” stars Li Ling, Brian Danforth, Pamelyn Chee, and Qing Lin.

Hello everybody! I’m Erik, a new blogger here! Introductions have never been my thing, so I’ll make this short. I live in New England, in Connecticut. I’ve been into Asian media for quite a few years and I’ve come across only a few people who were familiar with Asian entertainment until just recently. I feel like it’s getting a bit more recognition in other parts of the world, and hopefully by being a part of this site I can take part in it, no matter how big or small! I started out with Japanese music, where I liked the typical popular artists such as Ayumi Hamasaki, Utada Hikaru, Namie Amuro, and Olivia Lufkin, etc, but that was it. I began to venture into other types of Asian media such as dramas and other forms of entertainment, my obsession as of late being K-pop, with groups and singers like The Wonder Girls, Brown Eyed Girls, Lee Hyori, SHINee, and others.

Things are sort of back to normal (super freaking busy that is). Since last week, we’ve been working on a lot of new projects in addition to adding a new blogger! His name is Erik Taylor and he’s a Wonder Girls expert. I didn’t become a fan of the WG till after the Chuseok Festival so I’m really excited to see what he comes up with. We first discovered him on Youtube where he posted our WG interview which got a lot of exposure in a short amount of time.

But anyways I’m glad it’s the weekend but disappointed that it’s starting to get cold. I’m already wearing winter clothes when I go out. Again, it’s breast cancer awareness month so please don’t forget to donate/visit/etc!

Like always enjoy!

There is a video quickly circulating the web this week about an Asian American named Hubert Chang, who claims he was the 3rd founder of Google, and who was there and helped think up the search algorithm, system architecture, name, business model, and corporate culture.  He even cites the name of the Stanford professor who paired up Chang with Sergey Brin and Larry Page.  After collaborating on Google, Chang says he went to finish his Ph.D at NYU.

The story article is here.  This is a pretty wild story, but who knows when it comes to the tech industry?  There have also been rumors about how Facebook was created after Mark Zuckerberg stole the idea from people who hired him at CollegeU.com.  It would be cool if an Asian American were behind Google, to have another positive face out there to join Jerry Yang (Yahoo), Steve Chen (Youtube), and others going back to when An Wang invented magnetic core memory and founded juggernaut Wang Laboratories.

17 year old Sharon Tseung was recently ranked as Youtube’s 95th most viewed musician. Take a look at her singing What Hurts the Most or Rihanna’s Umbrella there are more examples on her Youtube or Myspace page.

Asian Heroes ambassador Ami recently had the opportunity to interview her. Sharon reflects,

I want to make a difference in the world [...] There are many great artists out there. It’s difficult to get into that business. I will try and seize opportunities and see where that gets me.

One of my absolute favourite comedians of all time, Eliot Chang. All Asian, All American, and yet he doesn’t pepper his show with nothing but cheap Asian jokes, that one may find is the tendency of the “ethnic” comedian. To be fair, there are a few Asian jokes, but that that is not the emphasis of his shows, ala Russel Peters. Genuinely funny and refreshingly original, this guy’s comedy is hold your stomach, double over, die laughing funny. Like seriously, I laughed so hard my back hurt and then I was sad.

I don’t think I can post YouTube clips here (or perhaps I haven’t found out how to yet) but some of my favourite jokes include his Gay Friend material, and his Fetish joke.

Everyday we are sure to hear terms like Viral Videos, Web Episodes, and Cyber Blogging. These are all common day words used by the most ordinary people. The Internet revolution has changed the way people seek entertainment in today’s world.

Enter the stylish, Shyaporn Theerakulstit (Tearahgunsehtaet) a YouTube comedian that is anything but a fly by night talent.

Ever the modest gentleman, he lives up to his nickname “Shy” and admits his videos are no Film Phenomenon. This charming actor proves he is not just another pretty face, as his videos are more than the commonplace, resentful drama web-cam video blog dairies, (called vlogs), but humorous sketches, that sometimes have an ethnic twist. He is best known for his “500 impressions in 2 minutes” video, he then taught us that kittens can fly, documented the daily grind of an unemployed hitman and wrote a zombie musical. He even has represented the only Asian super-friend and put him at the forefront of one of his videos. Never one to loose a clever sketch idea he keeps them on a mirror using dry erase marker. Be assured that each upcoming Holiday there will be another one of his immensely enjoyable videos premiering on YouTube. With such a diverse profile like this, you can easily see Shyaporn is a brilliant artist that is as sophisticated as he is creative.
